42 Readers are far too diverse. No book would be popular if the reader needed any close identification with a complex character. Whilst a book like Middkmarch sustains both emotional engagement with, and intellectual understanding of, complex characters, the sense of identification as such, even if people might liken themselves consciously to Lydgate or to Dorothea, is objective. The world depicted is made actual because we are led to understand it, and can only do so through its relationship with our own experiences.

The stories are, instead, set in unusual places or within unusual events. When they do deal with the more everyday world of childhood, they concentrate on children's lives outside school, in holidays mostly, or at least after school. It is as if the particular tradition of Arthur Ransome's Swallows and Amazons or Richmal Crompton's William books were the ones being continued rather than what used to exist as a substantial body of literature based in schools. With honourable exceptions, school life seems to be relegated for depiction in Grange Hill or the 'Bash Street Kids'.
