There are two Lake Bonneys in South Australia, both named after Ros’s great-great-grandfather, the explorer Charles Bonney and she is keen to investigate her ancestral connections. I have a different interest in Barmera but it also has a Penelope and The Manor 17 Bonney link. Many years ago a friend in Adelaide sent me a priceless cutting from the Advertiser newspaper about a cultural event that took place in the Bonney Theatre in August 1978. Sure enough, there it was as we drove towards the lake-side camping ground.
By the next day that section of the canal bank had collapsed, and the whole of the Bundidgerry flat was flooded. Bill Talbot, the town clerk of the day, suggested to the council that the flooded area be developed as a bathing and recreation area.
