Despite the centrality of the church in the lives of many AfricanAmericans, little empirical research exists describing adults’ spiritual beliefs and socialization practices, and children’s participation within the church. Such research, however, is highly significant to social service providers and educators seeking to enhance the development of AfricanAmerican children. From the perspective of resiliency research, intervention strategies should be based on naturally occurring processes that facilitate development.

During the first several sessions, I allowed children to perform into the tape recorder prior to and following Sunday School class. Interest in the tape recorder then faded fairly rapidly. I obtained written permission from the pastor and the teachers to visit and audio tape Sunday School classes. In addition, the project was described in the church bulletin circulated on Sundays, and any adults with questions, suggestions, or concerns were invited to contact the pastor or me.
